Philippine Shipwreck Death Toll Rises to Fifty-Two
“As of this morning, the PCG recorded 52 fatalities and 316 survivors in connection with the sinking of MV Trisha Kerstin 3,” the Coast Guard said in a statement shared on social media.
Technical divers remain at the wreck site, though officials have not specified how many passengers are still unaccounted for.
The MV Trisha Kerstin 3 was traveling to Jolo Island in Sulu province when it capsized near Baluk-Baluk Island, Basilan. The vessel sent a distress signal around 1:50 a.m. (1750 GMT) on January 25, roughly four hours after departing the Port of Zamboanga City at the southwestern tip of Mindanao.
The Philippines, an archipelago of about 7,000 islands, has a long record of deadly ferry accidents, often linked to overcrowding and insufficient regulation of vessels.
