(MENAFN) At least eight fatalities and mass displacement of thousands occurred after Tropical Cyclone Penha, designated locally as Basyang, triggered catastrophic flooding across the Cagayan region in the northern Philippines, local media confirmed Saturday.

A landslide claimed four members of one family in Cagayan de Oro City, according to a local media outlet .

Four additional deaths were documented in Iligan and Agusan del Norte.

The storm system unleashed devastating floods throughout Western Visayas, Negros Island Region, Central Visayas, and Caraga, forcing over 64,000 residents from their homes, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported.

Officials relocated 16,528 families to 480 evacuation facilities, while numerous others secured alternative refuge.

The state weather bureau confirmed Basyang deteriorated into a low-pressure area (LPA) early Saturday following five separate landfalls across Mindanao and the Visayas.
