Ambush on southern Philippine mayor leaves three gunmen dead

(MENAFN) Three gunmen were killed and two security personnel injured in an ambush targeting the mayor of Shariff Aguak in Maguindanao del Sur, southern Philippines, on Sunday, authorities reported.

The attack occurred early in the morning while the mayor was traveling in his bulletproof vehicle.

He escaped unharmed. The mayor’s backup vehicle was also hit by gunfire during the assault.

Investigators said the suspects opened fire from a white minivan on the mayor’s two-car convoy.

Authorities pursued the attackers, resulting in a brief shootout that left all three suspects dead.

High-powered firearms were recovered from the minivan.

The mayor has survived two prior assassination attempts over the past five years, highlighting ongoing security challenges in the region.
