Fifteen people die after ferry sank off in in southern Philippines
Rescue officials reported that 28 individuals remain missing following the sinking. Hundreds of others were pulled to safety after the vessel encountered trouble during its voyage.
The ferry, identified as the M/V Trisha Kerstin 3, was traveling toward Jolo Island in Sulu province when the incident occurred. Emergency responders confirmed that 316 passengers were successfully rescued, while search-and-rescue efforts continue with support from naval vessels and helicopters.
The ship sent out a distress call at approximately 1:50 a.m., around four hours after departing from Zamboanga City, located at the southwestern edge of Mindanao. Early information indicated that the ferry was carrying more than 330 passengers along with 27 crew members when it sank near Baluk-Baluk Island in Basilan waters.
Video footage released by authorities showed survivors being hauled from the sea and treated by medical teams. In the recordings, voices could be heard calling out for help amid the darkness as rescue operations unfolded.
Officials have launched a formal marine casualty investigation to determine what led to the sinking. Authorities also confirmed that no oil leakage was detected from the vessel.
The Philippines, an archipelago made up of roughly 7,000 islands, has frequently experienced fatal ferry accidents over the years, often linked to aging vessels and weak safety oversight.
