Philippines Reports 256 Rockfall Events at Mayon Volcano

(MENAFN) Philippine government scientists have documented a surge of 256 rockfall incidents at Mayon Volcano amid persistent lava flows, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) announced Sunday.

The agency's monitoring systems also detected 41 pyroclastic density currents sweeping down the volcano's slopes, while sulfur dioxide output hit 777 metric tons daily on Saturday, Philstar reported.

Measurements of ground deformation revealed the volcano remains inflated—a critical indicator of continuing volcanic instability beneath the surface.

Phivolcs officials noted that moderate steam clouds climbed as high as 200 meters (656 feet) above the crater rim, moving in a northeasterly direction.

Alert Level 3 status remains active for Mayon Volcano, a designation that took effect Jan. 6.

Officials maintain a strict ban on access to the Permanent Danger Zone, citing ongoing dangers from rockfalls, avalanches, and potential explosive activity.

The volcano's eruption history spans more than 50 events across five centuries. Its 2018 eruption forced thousands from their homes.

In separate developments, fatalities from a Philippines landfill collapse climbed to six Sunday as rescue operations pressed forward for dozens of buried workers.

Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak, chairperson of the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, confirmed recovery teams had pulled two additional bodies from the debris, while 30 individuals remain unaccounted for, media reported.

Emergency responders face dangerous conditions including torrential rainfall, unstable wreckage, and methane gas threats as they work to locate survivors beneath the collapsed structure.

The privately operated waste facility gave way at approximately 4:17 pm (0817GMT) Thursday in Cebu City, located in the Central Visayas region.
